Jharkhand CM Resigns Amidst ED Inquiry: Champai Soren Takes the Helm

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren steps down after facing questions from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding a money laundering case linked to a land deal. Soren’s resignation follows his arrest by the ED after the inquiry. The swift events unfold as Soren, accompanied by ED officials, heads to the Governor House to submit his resignation.

The next Chief Minister chosen by the alliance is Champai Soren, a prominent JMM leader and a seven-time MLA representing the Seraikella constituency. Currently serving as the transport minister in the Jharkhand government, Champai Soren earned recognition during the statehood movement for Jharkhand and is known as the ‘Jharkhand Tiger.’

Hemant Soren, at 48, also the executive president of JMM, faces ED questioning as part of an investigation into a significant racket involving illegal land ownership changes orchestrated by the mafia in Jharkhand. The case has resulted in the arrest of 14 individuals, including a 2011-batch IAS officer named Chhavi Ranjan, who held positions in the state’s Social Welfare Department and as deputy commissioner of Ranchi. Additionally, an employee of the Jharkhand land revenue department, Bhanu Prasad Prasad, has been apprehended by the ED.

This isn’t the first time Hemant Soren has faced ED questioning. On January 20, he was previously interrogated in connection with the same case, but the session remained incomplete. During the questioning, which lasted for more than seven hours, the ED delved into the details of the “huge racket of illegal change of land ownership by the mafia” in Jharkhand.
